So, today I decided to take a new approach in feeding Annie. I've been doing a lot of reading about what babies can eat and different theories behind how purees tend to not always help a baby develop the chewing instinct and in some cases just delay it. So, what would any "good" mother do?! HA...well, if you're me you decide to test the theory for yourself on your own little guinea pig. Thankfully Annie was a willing participant.
She has been trying to grab at our plates at dinner time for the past few days now and always wants to try what we're eating. A few days ago we gave her some Basmati rice from our plates and she was hooked on doing this feeding thing by herself. So, today I steamed some peas and cut up some fresh banana and put it on the tray of her high chair. Instinctively she tried to grasp a pea and bring it to her mouth but missed and ended up feeding Skye in the process. In the end, I had to help feed her, but the chewing was all Annie. She loved it and ate up all the peas and bananas I had put on her tray and even had some pureed carrots and pears.
As a result of my mini-experiment I conclude that Annie is not a big puree fan as she just spits it all out until I 're-scoop" it back into her mouth over and over again. With the peas and Bananas she was happy to chew them and swallow. That part made me happy as I could sit and watch her without worrying food would be all over the place. The downside is that mealtime that usually takes 10-15 minutes took almost 45 minutes. That being said, I loved every minute of watching her explore and try new things. I am glad she likes peas now as the pureed kind were NOT a hit and she would gag each time I attempted to sneak some in. I'm going to try and upload a video to show you how happy she was during mealtime today. I hope it works!
