Drive-In + Baby = Recipe for disaster

"A gay, Austrian TV reporter worms his way into style hot spots. " (http://www.5drivein.com/)

Yesterday Mason and I were talking about how we wanted to see a movie as my Mom had offered to come down on Sunday so Mason and I can have time alone. After a while, we concluded that we wouldn't get to talk at a movie so it was not a good idea. I'm not sure who suggested it first, but we decided we'd take Annie to the Drive-in on the weekend to see a movie together. As Mason was checking what movies were playing we realised that it was open during the week and if we go on a Thursday night that they have a 'carload' sale on for $15. So, we decided to go and see Bruno--Mason's choice as the last movie we saw was my pick.

Annie thankfully falls asleep on the way to the drive-in and we decide to make her comfortable and lay out her co-sleeper in the back seat as we were not going to have the A/C on. She normally is okay with transitons from the carseat to bed. However, this time Annie wakes up in the transition and decides to wail. So, I try to quiet her down by breastfeeding her. It doesn't really work as she's hot, tired and well, just plain cranky. So there we are, stuck in a hot car, with a screaming baby trying to watch a movie. Not a good idea.

Needless to say several parents brought their small children to see Bruno (a movie about a 19-year-old gay man trying to become famous through doing various provocative/sexual stunts). All I could think of is what were those parents thinking...and then it dawned on me, Oh my God, we have an infant with us! What kind of Mom does that make me?!

Half an hour before the movie was to end, Mason said he had to go to the bathroom. 10 minutes in to him being gone, the sound in the car stops Annie begins to wail again. I search for her pacifier, but can't find it as the lights won't go on either. So, I put my pinky into her mouth and she smiles and quiets down. 25 minutes go by and I'm certain something bad has happened to Mason and I begin to panic. I try calm myself down and give it 5 more minutes before I get up to find him. Thankfully he comes back minutes later as the movie has now ended. Turns out he was in line at the consession stand trying to get a Coke, but realised the movie had ended so comes back empty handed.

I tell him about the sound & lights going out so he tries to start the car. It doesn't start, the battery is dead. Thankfully the young couple next to us gives us a boost and we drive home. I'm dissappointed that a) the movie sucked and b) that we couldn't enjoy time out togeher as Annie's wailing drowned out any sound we had in the car.

In the end, Annie was awake for the ENTIRE movie, wailing or fussing when she's not feeding in a hot, sticky car. Next time we decide to take a baby to a movie remind us how crazy we are for thinking it could work. Lesson learned...don't wake a sleeping baby!

Annie and Mommy give Bruno four thumbs down! I'd have to say it's the worst movie I've ever seen. Yes, there are some funny parts but it is just plain ridiculous. Borat was funny, this one was just awful. I think I'm going to stop fast-forwarding through our PVR'd shows so I actually know what movies are about before I go see them. I had no clue what it was about, just heard it was funny...not so much.

On a happier note, I put Annie in her crib for her morning nap today. She was wide awake without a soother when I put her down and I'm happy to report that she put herself to sleep with no crying! WOO HOO. It looks like we'll keep the crib training up during the day so we can transition her to her own room in the weeks to come.

  1. Too bad the drive-in didn't work out. I would have thought that would be the perfect way to go see a movie!

  2. Don't give up on the drive-in just yet, honey. Nursing is the ultimate soother, and soon, you'll be able to watch a good movie sitting in the comfort of your family car...and if Mason brings cold drinks along in a cooler, things'll be perfect!!

  3. Amber you are such a good writer that I was LMAO when I read this blog. I could sooo remember adventures becoming misadventures when a baby was involved. Your description was so good that I literally felt your frustration and fear when Annie wouldn't settle and Mason was gone for longer than anticipated. I really enjoy reading your blogs as you really capture the joys and frustrations of motherhood/parenthood so well. And remember, (as I'm sure you will now) NEVER, EVER DISTURB A HAPPY OR SLEEPING CHILD.

    Love ya,
    Vivian
