Lesson learned.

Annie's serious face.
Today I took Annie swimming again. This time we went to the heated pool in our neighbourhood. It's awesome as it's the temperature of bathwater and Annie was not cold or shivering like the last pool we took her to.

We went with our friends Marijke and her son Makai. Marijke and I used to work together teaching ESL and have remained good friends despite both of us moving to new schools. The great thing is that we were able to share all the details of pregnancy together and now we get to share in the joy of motherhood. Makai is 5 weeks older than Annie so it's been great to see him grow up. Although they are so close in age, Annie and Makai are very different. Makai has already had a 'real' big boy hair cut as his hair was the cutest little curly mop. His Mom is white and his Dad is black and he has the best features of both of them. I always wanted a black baby, but unless we adopt I don't see this happening anytime soon.

After swimming for over an hour it was time to change Annie and get her ready for home. In the family change room they have everything you would need to keep a baby safe while their parents change or shower. So we put the babies in the high chairs and took turns changing while one of us supervised and fed the kids. They were starving after all the kicking in the pool. When it finally came time to change the kids, Marijke and I took our babies to the change tables. I pulled down the straps of Annie's bathing suit and was horrified as she had these gel pellets all the way up to her armpits. As I continued to pull her bathing suit off to change her diaper, I realized the pellets were from her diaper. I am not sure what I thought...but apparently when you have a baby in water for over an hour a diaper WILL explode. Annie's diaper literally was in two pieces with bits of gel everywhere. If I had the time, I would have taken a picture to show all of you. I thought swim diapers were just a way for diaper companies to make more money...turns out they are on to something.

Needless to say we've now got a pack of swim diapers now as Annie and I are going swimming again tomorrow. For all of you out there, don't make the mistake I did and put your baby in a regular diaper...apparently they are not designed to hold a litre of water. Lesson learned.

Love,
Amber
